The big diaper test: disposable, hybrid, and reusable diapers

There is no way for baby parents to avoid the topic of diapers. There are many different types of diapers on the market, so we carried out a diaper test where three parents tested different types on their babies.

The test included disposable diapers, innovative hybrid diapers, and reusable diapers. Read more and find out what parents think are the pros and cons of each diaper type!

Let us know in the comments which diapers you usually use on your baby and whether you would be willing to try other types.

  1. Disposable diapers: Änglamark diapers

Änglamark is a Swedish organic brand that places great emphasis on skin friendliness in all of its products. Änglamark's diapers are also particularly soft and absorbent for a baby’s sensitive skin.

  1. Hybrid diapers: Libero Hybrid Touch

Libero hybrid diapers are an innovative and environmentally friendly product. The diaper consists of textile pants and disposable inserts. A hybrid diaper uses 22% less material to make, making the diaper's climate impact 35% lower than that of a disposable diaper. The diapers have a velcro fastening.

  1. Reusable diapers: Pilvi diapers

Pilvi reusable diapers consist of snap-fastened diaper pants and reusable inserts. The adjustable snap fastening means the diapers are suitable for different ages, from newborn to three years.

The diapers were tested by:

  • the 10-month-old Egon, who is an active little boy and has not had any allergies. Egon is the first child in the family.
  • the one-and-a-half-year-old Eliise, described by her parents as more active than the average. Eliise is allergic to household chemicals – for example, scented laundry gels and baby wipes, etc. None of the diapers tested caused her an allergic reaction. Eliise is the second child in the family.
  • the two-year-and-three-month-old Apo, who is very active according to his parents: he moves around a lot by running, jumping, and climbing. Apo has no history of allergies and is the first child in the family.

Diaper use convenience for parents

We asked parents to rate how convenient it was for them to use the diapers on their babies on a five-point scale. Änglamark's diapers earned the highest average score of 5 points in this category. The parents of the toddlers Eliise and Apo said that diaper pants were the easiest option to put on a toddler who is walking around. However, the diapers by Libero and Pilvi had some problems in that regard. Namely, the parents found that these types of diapers were more difficult to put on a mobile child.

Libero hybrid diapers with velcro fastening earned a score of 3.3 for convenience of use. In the case of the active toddler Apo, for example, his father pointed out that having to adjust the velcro makes it a little more difficult to use with a toddler who is running away from you. However, the parents admitted that changing hybrid diapers was not really different from changing regular disposable diapers, although preparing for the change took a little longer.

In the case of the Pilvi reusable diapers, it was also pointed out that due to the snap fastening, it was a bit difficult to get them on a toddler running away from you. However, once they got the hang of it, the whole process was easier because the snap fastening in itself is convenient. The Pilvi diapers earned an average score of 3.

In their case, washing the diapers turned out to be the biggest concern. The diapers should be washed before the first use and after each soiling. Using reusable diapers requires care, patience, and time.

Diaper comfort for the babies

In terms of how comfortable the diapers felt for the baby, the Änglamark diapers also earned the highest score, 5 points. In their case, it was pointed out that the diapers fit the child perfectly and did not restrict movement or activity in any way.

The Libero diapers earned an average score of 4. The problem with Apo was that the diaper size that was chosen for him didn't fit him well and was a little too big. And that affected the overall comfort. For Egon and Eliise, however, the diapers seemed to be comfortable.

The Pilvi reusable diapers earned an average score of 3.3. In their case, it was pointed out that they seemed to fit differently than the usual and seemed a bit on the thicker side. None of the children experienced allergies during the diaper testing.

Absorbency and leaking

We also asked parents to rate the absorbency of the diapers. The diapers by Änglamark earned the highest score, or 5 points, in this category as well, with the absorbency rated as very good, and there were almost no leaks. When leaks occurred with Änglamark diapers, they were more likely due to how the diaper was put on.

The Libero hybrid diapers earned an average score of 4. The absorbency of these diapers was rated as average, as the diaper had to be changed more frequently and there were a few leaks. The Pilvi reusable diapers earned an average score of 3.6 because, although the overall absorbency was rated as good, there were occasional leaks.

Wallet-friendliness

The parents who participated in the test evaluated the price level of the diapers as well.

  • Änglamark diaper pants 8–15 kg, 42 diapers: €8.99
  • Pilvi reusable diaper with two inserts: €10.49; two inserts (sold separately): €6.49
  • Libero Hybrid Touch pants: €16.59; 24 disposable inserts: €6.99

The price level of all diapers participating in the test was rated as rather good, but the Libero hybrid diapers were rated as the most expensive. In the case of reusable diapers, it was pointed out that since diapers need to be purchased in advance for continuous use, the initial expenditure is high, but since they last a long time, they pay for themselves over time. The price level of Änglamark's diapers was assessed as very good.

Environmental friendliness

We asked the parents who participated in the test how important environmental friendliness and ecological footprint are to them when choosing diapers. Environmental friendliness is important to all parents, but when it comes to diapers, comfort still plays a big role and therefore outweighs the other aspects.

Summary

The parents who participated in the test liked Änglamark disposable diapers the most, as they are comfortable for both the parent and the child, have good absorbency, and are affordably priced.

The Pilvi reusable diapers take some getting used to and some more time, but are worth trying.

For those who want a middle ground between disposable and reusable diapers, hybrid diapers are the perfect choice. Thanks to their disposable inserts, the innovative Libero diapers require less work than reusable diapers, but have a smaller ecological footprint than disposable diapers.
